The Desk Job Body: Why Sitting All Day Wrecks Your Back (And What To Do About It)

Modern life involves a lot of sitting.
We sit at desks.
We sit on the sofa.
We sit on trains.
And our bodies weren’t really designed for that.
The result?
A very recognisable pattern I see in clinic all the time.
Tight hips.
Stiff backs.
Rounded shoulders.
What I call the “desk job body.”

What Sitting Does To Your Body
When we sit for long periods:
• hip flexors tighten
• glutes switch off
• upper back stiffens
• neck and shoulders start working overtime
Why Stretching Alone Isn’t Enough
Many people try to fix this with stretching.
And stretching can help.
But if the muscles responsible for posture are weak, the problem keeps returning.
This is why physiotherapy often focuses on:
• strengthening the upper back
• improving hip mobility
• retraining posture

Small Changes Make a Huge Difference
Simple changes like:
• standing up regularly
• improving desk setup
• doing mobility exercises
all significantly reduce pain over time.
If your job involves long hours sitting, back pain and stiffness are incredibly common, but they’re also very fixable.
At Thrive Physiotherapy Clinic in Islington we help many desk workers restore movement and reduce pain. Book in for your FREE 15 minute consult to see how we can help you
